A Polish pathologist secretly buried dozens of unborn babies in her garden — and called it science.
Story Snapshot
- Construction workers in the Polish village of Lutoryż found fetal remains buried with medical waste in June 2026.
- Prosecutors confirmed at least 34 human fetal remains on the property; some Polish media reports suggest the number could be far higher.
- Pathologist Magdalena H., 57, was arrested and claims she took the remains from a hospital during COVID-19 for home research.
- She faces up to 12 years in prison on charges of desecrating human remains and illegally dumping hazardous medical waste.
Construction Workers Uncover a Grim Secret
On June 10, 2026, construction workers digging at a private property in Lutoryż, a small village near Rzeszów in southeastern Poland, hit what looked like medical waste. Police were called. What investigators found beneath the soil was far worse — human fetal remains buried alongside medical equipment. The plot of land had previously belonged to a 57-year-old pathologist known publicly as Magdalena H.
By June 13, prosecutors officially confirmed the remains of 32 human fetuses had been recovered. By Monday, June 15, that number rose to 34. Investigators also found tens of thousands of microscope slides and paraffin blocks — tools used in pathology labs — spread across the roughly 5,400-square-foot property. Some Polish media outlets reported the true count could be anywhere between 50 and 100 fetal remains, and excavations were still ongoing.[1]
Pathologist Arrested, Claims She Did It for Research
Polish authorities arrested Magdalena H. on June 12 in Zamość, eastern Poland. She had no prior criminal record. According to investigators, she admitted to removing deceased fetuses from a hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. She claims she used them for medical research at home, then placed the remains in bags and buried them on the property.[3] Prosecutors also found tubes, microscope slides, and what appeared to be hospital records at the scene.
Prosecutors charged her with desecrating human remains and abandoning hazardous medical waste in an unauthorized location. The most serious charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 12 years.[2] Investigators are now looking into whether other burial sites exist and whether anyone else helped her. Magdalena H. will remain in custody until at least September 10, 2026.
No Evidence of Illegal Abortions — But Many Questions Remain
One key detail stands out: prosecutors said there is currently no evidence that the fetuses were obtained through illegal abortions.[4] Magdalena H. claims she took them through her hospital work. However, removing human remains from a hospital without proper authorization and burying them in a backyard is still a serious crime under Polish law — regardless of what she says she did with them. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out additional charges.

This case raises hard questions about how human remains are handled in medical settings and who is watching. When a doctor can allegedly remove dozens of fetal remains from a hospital, conduct unauthorized experiments at home, and bury them in a garden — all without detection for years — something has gone badly wrong with oversight. For those who believe unborn life deserves dignity and legal protection, this story is deeply disturbing. These were not lab samples. They were human beings, and they deserved better than a hole in the ground.[16]
