Two Men Caught Trying To Fire Drugs Into Federal Prison With Air Cannon

Authorities in Louisiana arrested two men who attempted to use a high-powered air cannon to send drugs and tobacco over the walls of a federal prison.

Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz, 18, and Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, 19, were caught outside the Federal Correctional Complex in Pollock before they could launch their packages. Deputies from the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office discovered $112,000 in tobacco and $89,500 in methamphetamine intended for inmates inside the facility.

The device the men used was a compressed-air cannon, a tool often seen at sporting events to shoot promotional items into crowds. The cannon they possessed could fire objects more than 350 feet, easily clearing the prison’s security fence.

Deputies had been monitoring the smuggling attempt before intervening. Law enforcement officers arrested the suspects near the facility and seized both the cannon and the illicit goods.

Both men face charges of attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and attempting to distribute methamphetamine. Additionally, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer on Munoz, as he is in the country illegally.

The incident occurred as FCI Pollock, a high-security facility housing 870 inmates, recently suspended all visitations indefinitely.
