Trump On Assassination Attempt: ‘I Took A Bullet For Democracy’

During a campaign rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, President Donald Trump addressed accusations that he is a “threat to democracy” by declaring, “Last week, I took a bullet for democracy.” This statement referred to a recent assassination attempt on his life.

The incident occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Thomas Matthew Crooks fired eight shots at Trump from a rooftop, striking him in the upper part of his right ear. Despite his injury, Trump stood before his supporters, fist raised, and encouraged them to “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

The assassination attempt followed years of rhetoric from Democrats, left-wing activists, and media figures labeling Trump a dictator and a threat to democracy. Critics argue that such language may have incited violence against him. Notably, President Joe Biden’s social media alluded to Trump as a dictator just minutes before the attack.

Democrats, including members of the progressive “Squad,” condemned the assassination attempt. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) wished Trump a “speedy recovery,” a gesture some viewed as insincere given her past criticisms of him. She resumed her harsh rhetoric soon after.

Following the attack, Trump appeared at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he gave his first public speech since the incident. Accepting the GOP nomination for president, Trump emphasized his dedication to defending democracy.

The Secret Service’s response to the incident has come under intense scrutiny. Agents spotted Crooks on the rooftop ten minutes before Trump was scheduled to speak but did not prevent the attack. This lapse, along with other reported failures, has led to multiple investigations.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle faces mounting calls for her resignation but has stated she does not intend to step down. She is set to testify before the House Oversight Committee on Monday to address these concerns.

Trump’s resilience in the face of danger has reinforced his message of fighting for democracy. As he continues his campaign, the scrutiny over the Secret Service’s actions and the broader political climate will likely remain focal points of discussion.
