Trump Calls On Biden To Release Jan. 6 ‘Hostages’

Former President Donald Trump called on President Joe Biden, during a Saturday speech in Clinton, Iowa, to release his supporters who are serving prison sentences for convictions related to their involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill protest. Trump referred to them as “hostages.”

“What they’ve done — and you know what they ought to do? They ought to release the J6 hostages. They suffered enough. They ought to release them,” the former Republican president said. “I call them hostages. Some people call them prisoners. I call them hostages. Release the J6 hostages, Joe. Release them, Joe. You can do it real easy, Joe.”

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has so far apprehended over 1,200 people who protested. The government has convicted 450 of the Jan. 6 protestors of crimes related to the events that day and handed them sentences totaling 850 years of prison time, according to DOJ data reviewed by the Washington Examiner.

Most protesters who have received sentences served only a few days in jail, but many are serving years-long sentences. Some are even serving decades behind bars.

Trump and Republicans in Congress allege President Biden has used the Justice Department to persecute his political opponents. Like many of his supporters at the Jan.6 protest, the former president faces charges from the DOJ that he and his lawyers say Biden officials timed to interfere with the election.

Internal Secret Services records have recently come to light that refutes a claim made by Democrats who support the indictments against Trump — that he planned ahead of time to stop at the U.S. Capitol to encourage protestors to disrupt the certification of the 2020 election results. The documents prove that Trump made no such plan.

While speaking at another recent event during his final Iowa campaign blitz, the former president argued what is happening at the southern border under President Biden is the attack on the United States: “Under crooked Joe Biden our borders have been absolutely erased. Millions of illegal aliens are invading us like a military invasion.”
