Trump-Backed Rep. Mark Green Cancels Retirement From Congress

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) announced, in a statement on Thursday, that he changed his mind about retiring from Congress and will seek another term after several Republican leaders, including former President Donald Trump, contacted Green and urged him to remain in Congress.

“While my strong desire was to leave Congress at the end of this year, since my announcement, I have received countless calls from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider,” Green said in a statement. In addition to Trump, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) encouraged her fellow Tennesseans to run for Congress again in 2024.

Green is a former officer in the U.S. Army. He said the outreach from so many others over his retirement reminds him “of the words of General McArthur on a statue at West Point: ‘Duty, honor, country.’ I realized once again: I had a duty to my country to fulfill.”

Green said he would not seek another term in office soon after the House passed a resolution to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Green told Axios in an interview at that time that he felt “frustration” over the ability of Congress to get anything done.

Trump praised Green in a post to Truth Social on Thursday and said he would endorse the Tennessee delegate to Congress if he ran for reelection.

“Mark Green has had lots of options because of his political talents, and the great job he has done as a Congressman, but given the fantastic work he’s doing as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I hope he runs for Re-Election to the U.S. House of Representatives,” Trump wrote. “If he does, he has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

Megan Barry, who is running for the seat in Congress, said in a statement: “Today, Mark Green changed his mind and decided to run for a job that just two weeks ago he said he didn’t want – just because his party bosses told him to. Green said himself what his bosses know, that my campaign is mounting a serious threat to flip this seat blue.”
