Syria’s Christians Hunted As Islamist Government Strengthens Hold

Christian and Alawite communities in Syria are suffering a wave of mass killings as Islamist militants tighten their grip on the country. In just a matter of days, over 1,800 people have been executed, with many more missing or feared dead. Entire villages have been destroyed, leaving survivors with nowhere to turn.

The crisis escalated after the downfall of Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia in December. By January, Syria’s government had been seized by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a terrorist group with deep ties to Al Qaeda. Under its newly installed leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the regime has launched a brutal campaign targeting Christians and other minorities.

Eyewitnesses report armed fighters moving through Christian neighborhoods, setting homes on fire and executing civilians in broad daylight. Priests have been murdered, churches have been desecrated and families have been forced to flee into the mountains with no protection. The violence has been concentrated in regions like Latakia, where some of the last Christian enclaves remain.

The international community has responded with little more than hollow statements. The United Nations acknowledged the bloodshed but avoided mentioning the religious nature of the killings. Western media has largely downplayed the crisis, shifting attention to the internal politics of Syria’s new leadership rather than the massacre of Christians.

Israel, which has the military capability to intervene, has taken no action. Despite its history of targeting jihadist groups in the region, Israeli leaders have not responded to calls from Syria’s Christians for assistance. With no outside intervention, the situation continues to deteriorate.

As Islamist forces push forward, Syria’s Christian population is rapidly disappearing. The massacres show no signs of stopping, and those who remain are left with no protection.
