State Charges Filed Against Trump Assassination Suspect

Florida has officially filed state charges against Ryan Routh, the man accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump in September. Attorney General Ashley Moody announced the charges Wednesday, emphasizing the need for accountability at both state and federal levels.

Moody explained that the charges include attempted felony murder, citing the injuries caused to a young girl during Routh’s escape. After fleeing the scene of the failed assassination attempt in West Palm Beach, Routh was captured on I-95. Law enforcement had to halt traffic during the operation, creating conditions that led to the girl’s critical injuries.

“His reckless behavior endangered lives and cannot go unpunished,” Moody said. She described Routh’s actions as domestic terrorism and noted that state prosecutors are committed to pursuing justice.

Federal authorities, however, have been criticized for their lack of cooperation. Moody revealed that federal agencies have refused to share evidence or involve state investigators in key aspects of the case. “Their unwillingness to work with us is deeply concerning,” Moody said.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) expressed frustration with the federal government, accusing them of stonewalling Florida’s investigation. “The people of Florida deserve answers, and we will not let federal obstruction stand in the way of justice,” he wrote on X.

Routh’s trial at the federal level is scheduled for February, but his legal team has requested a delay. The decision on that request is still pending.
