Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) recently voiced support for Vice President Kamala Harris, asserting that her evolving platform isn’t a sign that she’s giving up on progressive values but a strategic move to gain votes. Sanders discussed the topic on Meet the Press, highlighting that Harris is still committed to key progressive policies.
When asked by host Kristen Welker whether Harris had abandoned her ideals, Sanders pushed back, claiming, “I don’t think she’s abandoning her ideals. I think she’s trying to be pragmatic and doing what she thinks is right in order to win the election.”
Despite their differences, Sanders emphasized that he continues to view Harris as a progressive politician. While they may diverge on specific issues, Sanders pointed to Harris’ support for the child tax credit and her housing plan as evidence of her commitment to progressive goals.
Sanders acknowledged that some Americans, particularly those in rural and working-class areas, feel disconnected from government, believing it is more focused on serving corporate interests. While Harris doesn’t always share Sanders’ views, he said her housing plan — aimed at building millions of affordable units — is a “big deal” in addressing the ongoing housing crisis.
Harris has also proposed policies like price controls for groceries, which she says are designed to stop “price gouging.” However, many have criticized the plan, pointing out that grocery stores operate on razor-thin margins, usually around 1-3%.
Sanders may not agree with all of Harris’ stances, but he remains confident that she is still fighting for progressive change, even if her methods are adjusted to the demands of the campaign trail.
