Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov issued a warning Friday, stating that the United States and Russia are on the edge of “direct military conflict” due to actions taken by President Joe Biden. Speaking to Turkey’s Hurriyet Daily, Lavrov blamed what he called Biden’s “Russophobia” for escalating tensions between the two countries.
Lavrov remarked that under Biden, the U.S.-Russia relationship has reached a dangerous low, saying, “Under the current president… our countries are on the brink of direct military conflict,” according to the Business Recorder. Lavrov’s comments underscore Moscow’s view that Biden’s policies have created an increasingly hostile environment.
When asked about Russia’s view on the upcoming U.S. election, Lavrov said Moscow does not support one candidate over another. He noted that the Trump administration had imposed more sanctions on Russia than any previous administration, suggesting that Moscow does not anticipate any improvement regardless of who wins.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also recently commented, sarcastically claiming Biden was once his “favorite” choice. With Biden backing Kamala Harris as his successor, Putin mockingly added that Russia would “support” Harris, calling her laugh “expressive and infectious.”
Lavrov’s statement highlights Russia’s concerns over Biden’s foreign policy approach and the rising strain between the U.S. and Russia. With the U.S. election days away, Lavrov’s warning serves as a reminder of the serious international tensions at play as voters prepare to cast their ballots.
