Russia Says NATO Plans To Push Zelensky Out Through Leadership Shake-Up

Russia’s foreign intelligence service (SVR) has alleged that NATO is looking to remove Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by ensuring elections take place this year. The claim follows reports that Western leaders are pressuring Ukraine to hold its postponed vote.

SVR claims NATO officials see Zelensky as an impediment to peace talks and are preparing to expose financial scandals tied to his administration. The allegations include embezzlement of military funds and arms sales to foreign groups, which the agency claims will be used to discredit him ahead of a leadership transition.

Zelensky has remained in office beyond his term, which ended in May 2023, citing wartime conditions as the reason for delaying elections. While Ukraine has not confirmed whether a vote will take place, recent remarks from U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg indicate growing pressure for one.

Moscow suggests that Trump’s presidency is playing a role in NATO’s calculations, as Western governments may be looking for a leader who better aligns with changing U.S. policy. However, no specific candidate has been identified as a preferred replacement.

Kellogg is set to visit Kiev in the coming weeks after attending the Munich Security Conference. His meetings with Ukrainian and European leaders may provide insight into whether elections are being seriously considered.

Ukraine and NATO have not commented on the SVR’s statements. Zelensky continues to insist that Ukraine remains committed to securing Western support while accusing Russia of refusing to negotiate.
