In a bold and controversial move, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has proposed adding President Joe Biden to Mount Rushmore. During an interview on CBS News, Pelosi praised Biden’s presidency, suggesting his accomplishments are significant enough to warrant a place among the nation’s most revered leaders.
“He was in a good place to make whatever decision – the top of his game,” Pelosi said. “Such a consequential president of the United States, a Mount Rushmore kind of president.”
CBS host Lesley Stahl seemed taken aback by Pelosi’s assertion, questioning the appropriateness of the comparison. “Are you really saying that he belongs up there on Mount Rushmore? Lincoln and Joe Biden?” Stahl asked.
Pelosi stood by her suggestion, acknowledging the current figures on Mount Rushmore, including Teddy Roosevelt. “I don’t say take him down. But you can add Biden,” she replied.
The idea has sparked considerable backlash, with critics arguing that Biden’s policies have been detrimental to the country. Opponents contend that his administration’s actions do not justify such an honor and have fueled debates about what qualifies a president for inclusion on Mount Rushmore.
During the same interview, Pelosi addressed speculation about her involvement in pressuring Biden to reconsider his 2024 candidacy. “No, I wasn’t the leader of any pressure [campaign],” she claimed. “I didn’t call one person. I could always say to him, ‘I never called anybody.’”
Despite her public denial, a CNN report from last month suggested otherwise. According to the report, Pelosi privately advised Biden that he would struggle to defeat former President Donald Trump, citing poor poll numbers. She reportedly warned that remaining in the race could jeopardize the Democratic Party’s chances.
When asked by MSNBC whether she believes the 81-year-old Biden should step down, Pelosi was evasive. “I want him to do whatever he decides to do, and that’s the way it is,” she said. “Whatever he decides, we go with.”
The conversation between Pelosi and Biden, reportedly involving other prominent Democrats such as former President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), underscores the complex dynamics within the party as it prepares for the next election.
Pelosi’s proposal to add Biden to Mount Rushmore has intensified discussions about his legacy and the future direction of the Democratic Party. As debates continue, this suggestion has highlighted differing views on Biden’s impact and the criteria for national recognition.
