Migration Drives Texas To Lead US In Population Growth

Texas has become the nation’s leader in population growth, adding 562,941 residents between July 2023 and July 2024. New Census data shows this surge was driven by high levels of international migration and domestic moves.

The state’s population now totals 31,290,831, second only to California’s 39,431,263. Florida, the third-most populous state, also saw significant growth, adding 467,347 residents during the same period.

Texas ranked third in international migration gains, adding 319,569 residents from abroad. Florida and California led in this category, with 411,322 and 361,057, respectively. The Lone Star State also led the nation in domestic migration, gaining 85,267 residents.

States like California, New York and Illinois, however, faced steep losses due to domestic migration. California alone saw 239,575 residents leave for other states, the highest figure in the nation.

Texas saw the largest natural increase in the US, with 158,753 more births than deaths. This helped cement its place as a national leader in overall population growth.

A study by Smart Asset highlighted several Central Texas cities, including New Braunfels and Conroe, as some of the fastest-growing areas in the nation, reflecting the state’s broader growth trends.
