Human Smugglers Push Migrants To Cross Border Before Trump Implements Border Changes

Human traffickers are pressuring migrants to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office in January. According to the Wall Street Journal, smugglers are using apps like WhatsApp to warn migrants, “It’s now or never,” as stricter immigration policies are expected under Trump’s leadership.

The traffickers, many tied to organized crime, have emphasized that Trump’s administration will close the border to illegal crossings and implement tougher measures. Their messages also sarcastically wished migrants “luck” in avoiding apprehension once these policies take effect.

Trump’s plans for immigration reform include reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims are processed. He also intends to restart border wall construction and reinstate Title 42, a policy allowing for the swift expulsion of migrants.

Despite warnings from Mexican authorities discouraging illegal crossings, many migrants continue to head toward the U.S. border. U.S. border officials, anticipating a surge, have bolstered preparations to manage increased activity in the coming weeks.

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has increased law enforcement personnel along the border to address the situation. Abbott has been a vocal advocate for stronger border security and has consistently supported measures to curb illegal immigration.

The urgency expressed by traffickers underscores the significant changes anticipated under Trump’s administration. His policies aim to address what many see as a border crisis exacerbated by the Biden administration’s lax enforcement.
