Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY) is exposing how billions of taxpayer dollars are being funneled through the Department of Education, benefiting consultants and bureaucrats instead of students. Speaking with Winston Marshall, she detailed how federal spending in education is mismanaged, enriching political allies while schools remain underfunded.
She explained that out of the department’s $280 billion annual budget, less than a quarter is spent on actual classroom instruction. The majority, she said, is absorbed by a network of bureaucratic contracts, consultants and politically connected organizations.

“Hundreds of billions of dollars are flowing into a bureaucracy that doesn’t serve students. It goes to consultants, who in turn donate back to Democrat causes,” Hageman stated. “It’s a system designed to churn taxpayer money into political influence.”
She pointed to the Department of Government Oversight and Efficiency (DOGE) as a critical tool in uncovering these financial abuses. Though DOGE does not have the authority to slash budgets, its investigations can provide lawmakers with the information needed to make targeted cuts.
“I want a full report from DOGE identifying every wasteful program and every unnecessary dollar being spent,” she said. “Once we have that, we can start making serious changes.”
Hageman has been a vocal opponent of unchecked government spending, arguing that too much taxpayer money is used to fuel political favoritism rather than essential services. She has called for major reforms in how Washington allocates funds and has been pushing for stricter oversight.
Her efforts to expose financial mismanagement within the Department of Education could intensify conservative efforts to demand accountability and force budget reforms in federal agencies.
