Mel Gibson is developing a limited TV series centered on the Siege of Malta, a historic battle where Christians fought valiantly against the Ottoman Empire. This project marks a departure from Hollywood’s typical narratives, which often cast Christians in a negative light.
“I’m also working on a TV limited series about the Siege of Malta, which is an incredible story,” Gibson said, emphasizing the unique opportunity to film on location in Malta, where the actual events took place. The siege occurred from May to September in 1565 and was a significant conflict in the battle between Christian Europe and the expanding Ottoman Empire.
At that time, around 700 knights from the Knights Hospitaller defended Malta against a formidable force of 40,000 Turkish troops led by Suleiman the Magnificent. Despite the odds stacked against them, the knights achieved a remarkable victory, changing the course of European history.
The battle is noted for its staggering casualties, with 3,000 of the 6,000 defending Christians perishing, compared to 20,000 of the 40,000 invaders. This defeat marked a significant blow to the Ottomans and gave Christian Europe renewed hope in halting Turkish expansion.
The successful defense of Malta had far-reaching implications, delaying Ottoman advances in Europe until the Siege of Vienna in 1683. Gibson’s portrayal of this historic event promises to bring a fresh perspective to a crucial moment in Christian history.
Additionally, Gibson is preparing to film the long-anticipated sequel to “The Passion of the Christ,” which will depict Jesus’ crucifixion and the events leading to His resurrection. Filming is set to begin in the spring.
