EU Increases Scrutiny On X As German Elections Approach Amid AfD Surge

The European Union is intensifying its investigation into Elon Musk’s X platform, demanding disclosure of internal records related to its content recommendation algorithms. The probe follows Musk’s outspoken support for Germany’s populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has seen rising support ahead of the election.

EU authorities have instructed X to provide internal documentation by February 15 as part of the ongoing Digital Services Act (DSA) inquiry. The law gives regulators broad authority to monitor digital platforms for potential violations regarding content moderation and disinformation.

The pressure on X follows a high-profile interview Musk conducted with AfD co-leader Alice Weidel, which was widely viewed on the platform. Critics within the EU have accused Musk of using X to amplify political messages that challenge the ruling establishment’s stance on migration and other key issues.

Henna Virkkunen, the EU’s digital commissioner, stressed that compliance with the DSA is essential to maintain a fair digital environment. She suggested that X could face significant financial penalties if it fails to comply with EU demands for transparency.

Musk has pushed back against the investigation, asserting that X is being unfairly targeted for providing a platform where diverse political viewpoints can be freely expressed. He has maintained that the company does not manipulate content to favor any particular group.

Beyond the algorithm disclosure, the EU has also required X to preserve key records through the end of the year to ensure compliance with its investigation.
