
Denmark is preparing for a major military buildup, with the government set to introduce a significant increase in defense spending. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced that the country must take urgent steps to strengthen its military in response to rising concerns over Russia’s actions in Europe.
Frederiksen stressed before parliament that Denmark faces an unprecedented security challenge and must act swiftly. She stated that the current situation is more dangerous than during the Cold War and warned that the threat to Europe continues to grow.
Denmark will spend 50 billion DKK ($7 billion) to rearm its military.
Initially, Danish government wanted to allocate more money to the fund, but European arms manufacturers are having a hard time keeping up with demand.

The Danish government is expected to establish a 50-billion-kroner ($7 billion) fund to boost its military capabilities over the next two years. An initial proposal to double the amount was considered but later reduced due to limitations in available defense equipment.
A top priority for Denmark’s military expansion is the purchase of air defense systems, which the country currently does not possess. Danish public broadcaster DR reported that acquiring these systems is critical to strengthening national security.

If the plan is approved, Denmark’s defense budget will rise to 3% of GDP, surpassing NATO’s 2% benchmark. Former President Donald Trump has pushed for NATO members to increase their military contributions to 5%, while the US currently spends about 3.4% of GDP on defense.
Denmark has been one of Ukraine’s strongest backers, providing approximately $7.52 billion in military assistance and an additional $741 million in civilian aid since 2022, according to the Danish foreign ministry.
