Democrat Rep. Doggett Urges Biden To Step Down, Cites Overwhelming Constituent Concerns

Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) has become the first current Democrat lawmaker to publicly call on President Joe Biden to step down as the party’s presidential nominee. Doggett’s remarks came during a Tuesday interview on NBC News’ “Hallie Jackson NOW,” where he expressed deep concerns following Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump.

Doggett shared that he was so alarmed by Biden’s performance that he immediately took action the next day. “The next morning, I was out to talk on the floor of Congress with our leadership, and with as many of my colleagues as I could find, to express the view that it was time for a replacement and for President Biden to step aside,” he said.

Returning to Texas, Doggett found that his constituents overwhelmingly supported his stance. “Coming home to Texas this weekend, I would say that the input from my constituents has been 10-1 in favor of replacing President Biden on the ticket,” he noted.

Doggett revealed that he has heard from other members of Congress following his call for Biden to step down but did not disclose their responses. He emphasized that his decision to speak out was motivated by concern for the country rather than personal gain. “I thought it was time for me to speak up. Not for any self gain, but because I think the risk to our country is so great,” Doggett explained.

He also highlighted the fears among Democrats that Republicans could potentially win control of the House and the Senate in the 2024 elections. Although acknowledging that the process to replace Biden would be “messy” and “chaotic,” Doggett stressed that it was a necessary step to prevent Trump from regaining the presidency.
