China’s Covert Tactics Helped Trudeau While Canada’s Government Withheld Evidence

New intelligence reports reveal China’s extensive efforts to manipulate Canadian politics, particularly in recent elections that saw Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remain in power. Evidence shows that Beijing funneled money into campaigns and worked through intermediaries to support candidates aligned with its interests, yet the Canadian government has refused to release full details of the interference.

Security officials found that China’s operatives used clandestine financial channels to back at least 11 candidates, most of whom ran under Trudeau’s Liberal Party. The money reportedly came from Chinese diplomatic sources and was distributed to select political figures in Toronto-area elections. Despite widespread concerns, the Trudeau administration has kept the names of these individuals hidden.

A broader intelligence investigation found that China’s influence efforts in Canada go well beyond election interference. Reports from security agencies confirm that Beijing has worked to establish strong ties with lawmakers, media figures and business leaders to ensure policies remain favorable to the Chinese Communist Party. Intelligence assessments describe these operations as persistent and highly organized.

One of the most significant breaches tied to China’s activities in Canada involves the country’s top infectious disease lab in Winnipeg. Two researchers, Xiangguo Qiu and Keding Cheng, were dismissed after security officials determined they had transferred sensitive data to Chinese institutions, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The pair later left Canada and resurfaced in China, continuing their work with military-linked research groups.

The Trudeau government has fought to keep key details of China’s operations from public scrutiny. A parliamentary inquiry into election interference was largely kept behind closed doors, with officials refusing to disclose crucial intelligence findings. A separate ethics committee investigation was also blocked by government maneuvering.

The issue has now drawn attention from U.S. officials, who have requested intelligence briefings on China’s infiltration of Canada’s security and political institutions. Concerns are growing over how much influence Beijing has gained in Canada and whether Trudeau’s administration has done anything to stop it.
