A Heritage Foundation report released Thursday warns that the Biden-Harris administration’s green energy policies are walking America into a trap set by China. The report argues that by prioritizing green energy technologies, the U.S. is becoming increasingly dependent on Chinese-controlled supply chains for the raw materials needed to produce wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicles (EVs).
The analysis, authored by Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Miles Pollard, contends that China’s dominance in green energy supply chains has been built through state-backed initiatives, strategic acquisitions, and unfair trade practices. The authors argue that America’s reliance on these Chinese-controlled resources puts the country at a significant economic and strategic disadvantage.
The report criticizes the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which poured billions of dollars into green energy subsidies. The authors claim that these subsidies are counterproductive, as they divert resources away from more reliable and secure energy sources like fossil fuels and nuclear power. The report recommends repealing green energy subsidies and streamlining permits for domestic mining projects to reduce America’s dependence on foreign resources.
The analysis also calls for tougher trade policies to counter China’s dominance, including the use of tariffs and leveraging international institutions like the World Trade Organization (WTO) to hold China accountable. The authors argue that America’s current energy strategy is not only economically damaging but also a threat to national security, as it deepens the country’s reliance on a geopolitical rival.
