Biden Commends Secret Service Chief Despite Security Failures

President Joe Biden expressed gratitude for Kimberly Cheatle, the former Secret Service Director, who has faced severe criticism for her role in the near-fatal shooting of former President Donald Trump. Cheatle announced her resignation after a contentious House Oversight Committee hearing.

In a statement, Biden praised Cheatle’s dedication. “Kimberly Cheatle has selflessly dedicated her life to protecting our nation. We are especially thankful for her leadership during our Administration,” he wrote. “As a leader, it takes honor, courage, and integrity to take full responsibility for an organization tasked with one of the most challenging jobs in public service.”

Cheatle’s resignation follows a harrowing incident at a Pennsylvania rally where a 20-year-old gunman fired multiple shots, hitting Trump in the ear. Trump, who turned his head just in time, avoided more severe injury. Tragically, Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed while protecting his family, and two others were seriously injured.

During the House Oversight Committee hearing, Cheatle acknowledged the agency’s failures and announced an internal investigation. However, she provided limited information and withheld documents requested by Congress, as alleged by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). Cheatle also stated there were no radio recordings from the day of the attack.

Fox News reported that the gunman had hidden his firearm before the attack. “It was not immediately clear where he hid it,” the report noted. “By the time agents spotted him on the roof, he was already holding it.”

Cheatle admitted that no counter-snipers were on the roof due to its slope, citing safety concerns. Despite identifying the shooter as a potential threat, Trump was still allowed to take the stage. Video footage shows rally attendees warning authorities about the shooter moments before the attack.

Biden’s statement also mentioned plans to appoint a new Secret Service Director soon. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and Cheatle’s resignation is seen as a move toward accountability for the security failures.
